PROJECT / RESEARCH
title>REHEARSING AN ABSENCE/ A PRESENCE OF
A CULTURAL BODY
author>Lina Issa
To explore the issues mentioned in the aspects
I will send a ‘stand-in’ for me to Lebanon.
This stand in will visit my family, stay with them; visit my friends,
and different locations and cities that constitute my memory and idea
‘Home’ as I imagine it from the distance. There will be a cameraperson
registering parts of her visits. She will be like a recording device that
will come back with a lot of recordings (to be determined in what form),
and my role will be to play these recording back here.
Stand-in: one who substitutes for an actor during the
lengthy setup of a scene; while the lights and camera are adjusted.
I will be using the term ‘stand-in’ as a broad metaphor. It is a temporary
substitute that has its own character; however, it embodies the space
of another character helping constructing the scene and specifying
its qualities. The stand-in will help me (re) construct my memory
of the places, situations and people it will meet in Lebanon. This could
happen by confronting ‘the stand-in’s’ experience and its memory of Lebanon
with those of mine. (This desire to visit or inhabit the space of memory
has within its desire the potential to fail or reveal an impossibility,
to hint at that which is unrepresentable, to point at something lost/gained
by dislocation).
There will be a continuous shift of roles and their definition in this
project. Who is the ‘main character’, who is the ‘stand-in’, who is the
author, who is performing ‘the action’, where is the action, to whom does
the action point, what is the ‘original’, what is the copy (the fraud)?
The project starts at the moment of ‘meeting’ this ‘stand-in’.
Gender: female.
Age: 24-30.
Nationality: has a passport that allows her to be wherever she
wants to be. Resident of the Netherlands.
Language: English.
Characteristics: I’m interested in someone with physical
awareness and sensitivity, able to locate and register experience within/through
her body. I am interested in a certain ‘presence’, that which can be sensitive,
transparent and able to engage and reflect its surrounding in the way
it ‘inhabits’ itself, the moment and the place. I think of her as an ‘indexical
presence’ that will point at, stir and reveal things.
Tasks: I would like to negotiate with her ‘a cultural
body’, to imagine the migrant’s movement between a 'past body' and a 'present
body', and to think of our movement between a 'remembered body', 'lived
body' and 'imagined body'. Our movement between ‘my body’ and ‘her body’.
