SOCIO - POLITICAL
title>CONCRETE AND LIGHTNING
authors> Ruth Buchanan and Ruth Legg
SOCIAL
A common view of the artist is one of a loner, as one whos ‘mission’ is
a solitary one. In this sense the artist can be seen as somebody who does
not conform to the rule of society, but someone who is allowed to exist
in a capsule, giving them certain privileges. By placing together two
contrasting ideas or words, as used in the project, there is the possibility
for the artist to undermine the idea of the ‘mission’. The single voice
of the artist as separate and clear from society, becomes confused and
unreadable, it is in here that the potential for the mobility of the artist
seems most probable.
POLITICAL
Through the series of scenarios we have been working with we have been
investigating ideas around arts production and expectations in the arts
community of climax and/or the ultimate. We are interested in questioning
or perhaps undermining systems of production in the art world. `What happens
if we accept that the possibility of failure is innately part of the process
what if we decide that confusion is something that is unavoidable, what
happens if we work in a field that we have little or no experience in?
How can we question notions of ‘good art’ or ‘smart art’ by a willingness
to try out?
