Rather than producing more freedom I would argue that mobile devices, instead of further mobilizing us in the world are actually immobilizing us in a web of market research, advertising and further capitalism, which in turn produces and brands mobility and mobile devices as representations of freedom. The increased pace of life produced by the neo-liberal capitalist systems and commodity fetishism requires more mobility from us and this in turn demands us to consume more and more mobility minutes and devices. As all mobile devices are the creation of certain capitalist impulses supporting the free market economy, in the end all that we do as privileged citizens of the First World is to maintain highly branded illusions of freedom, rather than actually being free. And thus we become imprisoned, encapsulated citizens.
