Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program exhibition
Social Capital

It will be held at the Art Gallery of the CUNY Graduate Center, located in midtown Manhattan, from May 20, 2004 through June 26, 2004.

The exhibition brings together contemporary artists who examine or facilitate social relations through their works. Responding to contemporary social conditions, some artists consider the influence of new technologies on personal relations, while some explore the effects of cultural difference and political concerns on human connections. Others create or orchestrate situations that allow viewers to interact in the gallery space. Together, the artists in Social Capital offer various models of relating and possibilities for agency through social formations. Among the artists currently under consideration are Abou Caraballo and L.C. Farman, Andy Deck, Renée Green, Jens Haaning, Emil Hrvatin and Peter Šenk (FWC – First World Camp), Mark Lombardi, Luc Steels, Santiago Sierra, Elaine Tin Nyo, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and the collectives, Mongrel, Red 76, 16 Beaver, and Sociable Media Group.

Refugee Camps for the Citizens of the First World (2004) plays a significant role in elaborating our theme of artworks that consider various forms of social connections.
